On Wednesday, June 6, the City of Salem issued a new advisory for vulnerable populations to not consume tap water due to algae blooms in the Detroit Reservoir. This advisory is expected to continue at least through Monday, June 11. This only applies for the City of Salem – not the City of Keizer or for those locations that use well water.

Populations affected by the City of Salem Water Advisory:

  • Those under the age of six
  • People with compromised immune systems or pre-existing liver conditions
  • People receiving dialysis treatment, or other sensitive populations
  • Pregnant women or nursing mothers
  • Elderly
  • Pets

Due to the generous donations of water that the district has received, we have elected to continue providing bottled water to pre-K through first grade and all vulnerable populations for the remainder of the year in our Salem schools. We also will continue preparing food using bottled water or without water through the end of the year so it is safe for all populations. We are assessing summer programs now and developing a plan to support them if needed.

  • Chemeketa Community College, Brown Parking Lot, 4000 Lancaster Drive NE, Salem
  • East Salem Suburban Water District, 3805 La Branch St. SE, Salem (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.)
  • City of Keizer, 4969 Rickman Road NE, Keizer
  • Former Chevrolet Dealership, 5325 Denver St., Turner

All bulk water distribution locations are pull-through. Residents must bring their own containers. For the vast majority of Salem residents, the water remains safe to drink and no action is needed. Residents in need of assistance can contact City of Salem Public Works at (503) 588-6311. For medical information during the advisory, please call 2-1-1.

Se espera que este aviso continúe vigente por lo menos hasta el lunes 11 de junio. Esto solo aplica para la ciudad de Salem, no a la cuidad de Keizer o aquellas localidades que cuentan con pozos de agua.

Población afectada por el aviso relacionado con la emergencia del agua en la Ciudad de Salem:

  • Los niños menores de 6 años de edad
  • Personas con el sistema inmunológico comprometido o condiciones del hígado preexistentes

On Wednesday around 10:45 a.m., we received notice that due to algae blooms in the Detroit reservoir, it is advised that children ages 5 and under not drink water from the City of Salem. At the direction of the Oregon Health Authority, this applies to children age 5 and under as well as anyone who is pregnant, nursing, receiving dialysis or immunocompromised and pets. This does not apply to water in the City of Keizer, as it comes from a different supply. It also does not apply to county locations that use wells for their water supply. We will offer bottled water in our schools for students in pre-K through first grade and for medically fragile or pregnant students and staff.

Because we did not have notice of this event, meals today have already been prepared with tap water. There are options in all cafeterias that were prepared without water, so if students or staff have concerns, schools will work with cafeteria staff to make accommodations. Future meals will be made with bottled water until further notice.

Free drinking water will be available at 2 p.m. at multiple locations in the City of Salem.

The sites will operate around the clock until further notice. All bottled water distribution locations are pull-through, one case per vehicle for vulnerable populations as listed below.
The water advisory applies to:

  • Those under the age of six

The water advisory for children under 6, populations who are immunocompromised, the elderly and pregnant and nursing mothers in the City of Salem has been extended. Salem-Keizer Public Schools will continue to provide bottled water for these populations; however, we cannot offer bottled water to those students and staff outside the advisory. The City of Salem has set up free water stations at the following locations, which will open at 7 p.m.:

  • Wallace Marine Park, Old Boat Launch Parking Lot, 200 Glen Creek Road NW
  • Kroc Center, 1865 Bill Frey Dr. NE
  • Bush’s Pasture Park, 600 Mission St. SE
  • Woodmansee Park, 4629 Sunnyside Road SE
  • Jan Ree at AMF Firebird Lanes, 4303 Center St. NE
  • Chemeketa Community College, 4000 Lancaster Drive NE

All bulk water pickup locations are pull-through. Residents must bring their own containers. There is a 5 gallon limit per vehicle. There are also a number of locations available in Keizer, which is not impacted by this advisory. We will continue to keep our families updated with more information as it becomes available.
